A History of String, 2007

"A History of String" details three ways in which string, a tactile line with well-known purposeful uses, has also been tied, hung, and handled in order to express abstract thought. Interweaving facts about three culturally specific uses of string- eruv, quipu and string figures- with facts about the historical connections between filmmaking and sewing, the piece reflects on the ways in which non-material meaning can be made by hand. A looping, silent video is projected onto an embroidery stand, and a zoetrope (made in collaboration with Cat Mazza) is installed nearby.
